VILLA DUBOCHET 19

CLARENS - MONTREUX
SWITZERLAND

The renovation of Villa Dubochet 19: a huge work combining respect for heritage, architecture and contemporary comfort. As part of a prestigious ensemble of late 19th century houses in Clarens – Montreux, this project was our first opportunity to collaborate with the Sipal (Real Estate, Heritage and Logistics Department) and the « Mikulas » Architecture office for all that concerned the facade and the « Calonder » office for the landscaping.

The Villas Dubochet, located in Clarens in the Municipality of Montreux, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, form an exceptional ensemble of 20 residential homes, originally designed as rental properties for affluent guests seeking to avoid the proximity of hotel accommodations.

These villas are classified with the highest historical rating (No. 1) by the Department of Historical Monuments and were built between 1874 and 1880, making them an outstanding example of architectural heritage from that period.

The Facade

The project began in February 2016 and was completed at the end of March 2018, following more than two years of careful and detailed work.

It involved expanding the living space and incorporating modern comfort features in line with the high standard expected of this type of villa. Due to the villa’s protected status, the extension could only be carried out at the basement level, ensuring the preservation of the building’s architectural identity.

The architecture—such as the façades, roofs, openings, and balconies—was meticulously restored in accordance with the original design.

The interior concept was designed in such a way as to create a south extension to allow for two beautiful additional bedrooms, in addition to the rooms on the 2nd floor of the villa. The upper floor consists of day spaces: living room, kitchen, dining room and an office for the master of the house. The fully windowed room under the south pergola is an extension of the kitchen and dining area.

The Leaving & Dining Room

The Leaving & Dining Room

The staircase of Villa Dubochet, an exceptional historical monument, was renovated in a pink hue, a choice that, according to experts in historical monuments, originates from the villa's archives.

These experts discovered that the staircase, both the steps and the walls, was originally designed in this pink shade to echo the villa's turret.

The turret, designed by the architect who created all the Villa Dubochet buildings in the style of a small castle and made of red bricks, creates a visual harmony with the staircase, emphasizing the elegance and architectural coherence of the entire building.

This pink hue, both delicate and bold, subtly links the interior and exterior of the villa, unifying the spaces while reinforcing the building's architectural identity.
The first floor was entirely devoted to the master suite, with the bedroom, a generous bathroom opening towards the bedroom and the view of the lake, a large dressing room, a make-up area and a second office space.

Staircase leading to the Attic

The renovation of Villa Dubochet strikes a delicate balance between preserving heritage and embracing contemporary design.

While respecting strict historical preservation guidelines, the project introduces bold modern elements.

A standout feature is the staircase leading to the attic, designed as a striking contemporary addition with an integrated bookshelf beneath.

The attic, once unused, has been transformed into an elegant and functional office for the gentleman of the house.

This project showcases a harmonious blend of tradition and creativity, breathing new life into Villa Dubochet while grounding it firmly in modernity.

The Attic

The basement of Villa Dubochet showcases remarkable technical expertise and architectural ingenuity. A second basement level was created—a challenging feat given the lakeside location of the property.
This required meticulous waterproofing to ensure complete insulation and prevent any water infiltration.

The new space was designed to meet the client’s vision of a functional yet luxurious area, including a guest WC, a serene wellness area, a climate-controlled wine cellar, and a state-of-the-art home cinema.

These elements were carefully planned to enhance the villa's modern functionality while respecting its unique setting.

Guest Restroom

The Welness Space

The wellness space was specially designed for Monsieur, who wanted a unique place, completely separate from the rest of the house, where he could retreat and relax.

This space was envisioned to offer an experience in a magical setting, combining comfort and serenity.

It includes all the essential elements for complete well-being: a shower, sauna, jacuzzi, and hammam, creating an environment conducive to relaxation and tranquility.

Every detail was carefully considered to ensure a soothing atmosphere, away from the daily hustle and bustle, in a luxurious and peaceful setting.

Basement Corridor

In line with the same vision, other spaces were created according to Monsieur’s specific requests, including a home cinema and a highly designed wine cellar.

These spaces were conceived with the goal of transporting the owners to entirely different atmospheres, far from the historical character of the villa.

The home cinema, with its immersive and modern ambiance, and the avant-garde wine cellar, offer an experience that stands in stark contrast to the rest of the house.

Located primarily in the basement, these areas make full use of the available space, introducing a fresh and innovative dimension to the residence, while remaining in harmony with the owners’ contemporary aspirations.

Wine Cellar

The "Villa Dubochet" project has achieved an impressive accolade, winning the prestigious European Property Award in London for Best Interior Design in a Private Residence within Switzerland.

This recognition highlights the villa's innovative design and exceptional aesthetic, setting a new benchmark for luxury interiors in the country.
